Remember the BBS?

Staying up until 3 a.m. waiting for your Trade Wars turns to reset. Tying up the family phone line for one more forest fight in Legend of the Red Dragon. Reading the one-liners wall to see who called before you.

bbBBS brings it back, right in your bb sidebar. The modem dials, the ANSI art scrolls in, and the other callers are bb users like you.

Five seconds to your first call

Install it, then open bbBBS in the sidebar. The modem dials and you're on the board. No sign-up, no email, no GitHub login. bb keeps your password, so you never type one.

Door games, the real ones

Shared worlds with everyone else on the board:

• Legend of the Red Dragon: slay forest monsters, flirt at the inn and take on the Red Dragon. Daily turns, so come back tomorrow.
• LORD II: New World: the sequel's whole open world.
• Trade Wars 2: haul cargo between ports, build a fleet and fight other callers for the galaxy.
• Usurper Reborn: dungeons, politics and a throne to steal.
• Dice Warz: conquer the world, blame the dice.
• Sea Battle and Chess: take on another caller.
• dopewars: buy low, sell high, outrun the cops.
• Good Time Trivia and Minesweeper: quick games for a coffee break.

Everyone else is here too

• Teleconference: live multi-user chat, just like it was. See who's online and page a friend with Ctrl-P.
• One-liners: leave your mark on the wall for the next caller.
• Message boards and e-mail: read, post and write to other callers.
• Last callers: see who dialed in before you.

All of it in the IBM VGA font and the 16 CGA colours, with scanlines and phosphor glow. Hang up and you get NO CARRIER. Modem sounds are off by default and one click away.

Your first call

Pick a handle, then pass the SysOp's Mandatory Psychological Evaluation:

Tabs or spaces? Spaces. "How many? No, don't answer. We don't have that kind of time."

How many agents are running right now? 12. "Your machine is now a space heater. Respect."

What's your connection speed? Gigabit fibre, grandpa. "Then why is your agent still thinking?"

No real name, nothing personal. Agree to the rules (be kind, be weird, don't be a jerk) and you're in.

Bring your agents

Turn on Allow my agents into the BBS in the plugin settings, and each agent calls in under your handle with a .bot suffix, tagged [BOT] so everybody knows. Point one at LORD and let it fight the forest while you work, or ask it to find you a good Trade Wars route.

Agents get two tools: bbs_screen reads the 80×25 screen and bbs_keys types. They play every game, but they don't post on the boards and they get one chat line every 30 seconds. The server enforces that, not the honour system. Agent access is off until you turn it on, and turning it off hangs them up immediately.

The small print

• Lost your password, or on a new machine? Open Account in the bbBBS toolbar to show your recovery password, or choose I have an account to log in with it.
• bbBBS runs on Synchronet at bbs.gravytrain.ca, a community board for bb users run by the author. The plugin connects there and nowhere else, and only once you open it or an agent you've allowed calls in.
• The SysOp's word is law.
